The Undy 5000 in 2010 – Part 1

April 19, 2011

In 2010, the Undy 5000 series reached 14 cities nationwide. Here are a few of the first-year event blurbs. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover here, so stay with me!

San Diego

Team Droid West in SD!

San Diego’s first-ever Undy 5000 kicked off 2010 on March 6th. We were so excited to finally get an Undy out to California, and trust us when we say the people and the weather there will keep us coming back (especially after the awesomeness that was 2011)! San Diego’s 450 participants raised more than $63,000 in 2010, and in 2011, more than 600 folks raised over $87,000! And in 2011, as you can see from 2 blogs ago, the largest team ever up to that time was formed by the Blue Ribbon Booties! What will 2012 bring us? Gooo West Coast!

Grand Rapids

Participants running in the Grand Rapids Undy!

The Grand Rapids (that’s, Michigan, folks) Undy 5000 succeeded at East Grand Rapids Middle School on April 24th. The event raised more than $75,000, some of which was left behind to Project Access, a volunteer physician program that offers a unique healthcare service for uninsured, low-income residents of Kent County, MI. Participants also got to play with the daVinci® Robotic Surgery System, a state-of-the-art technology that seamlessly translates the surgeon’s hand movements for a more precise operation than conventional instrumentation. Fun!

The Undy then visited Cheney Stadium, the home of the Tacoma Rainiers in Tacoma, Washington. On June 5th, almost 300 participants ran the Undy while being entertained by Hope, CCA’s Blue Star mascot, and Rhubard, the Rainiers mascot (and in a dance off, I’ve totally got my money on Hope!) Nearly $40,000 was raised, some of which went to a screening program developed by Digestive Health Specialists.

Jersey Shore

Getting ready to run on the Jersey Shore!

Our next first-year city in 2010 was Long Branch, NJ, but we like to call it Jersey Shore. While there were no Snooki sightings in 2010, we don’t know what could happen in 2011! We do love Jersey Shore for it’s beautiful beaches, laid back people and the always-fun Pier Village, and that’s why we’re coming back this year on July 23. Last year’s Undy brought 400 individuals together and raised almost $50,000! We look forward to an even more successful 2011 Jersey Shore Undy!

Royal Oak

Cute outfits, gentlemen!

The Royal Oak Undy (hey, another Michigan race!) will wrap up part 1 for the 2010 Undy race blog post. On July 31st, 2010, William Beaumont Hospital grounds were transformed into a giant pool of underwear (and tutu’s, as shown by the photo to the left)! Participants came from as far as three hours away to take part in the event, which raised nearly $50,000.

Stay tuned for the Undy 5000 in 2010 – Part 2, coming soon!
